Module Inventory and Indentification, Part II

 The Hunt Continues.......

Total module count, so far: 30. That's a bit more than the original estimate. Using the Hardware Reference Manual and the Cray-1 Block Diagram, modules were sorted by their Alpha-Numeric ID, Type and purported Function. Spreadsheet also indicates I.C.s dominant on a particular module. And here we run into our first snag....Remember the texts that mention the Cray-1 is made up of only three (some say four) chip types? Quick glance at the modules shows six, unless I.C.s of similar functions carry different P/N's........

Have We Been FCO'ed...?

 Making Modular Sense.....

In short time we were able to identify and tag several of the Cray-1 modules on hand. Some of the two-letter ID's repeat, but that's to be expected as modules of the same type exist throughout the chassis. Others however do not appear in the Block Diagram at all. Serial numbers indicate that some of these modules are of later manufacture and likely replaced modules of earlier designation, or in Cray-speak, were subject to a Field Change Order.

Module Identification and Locations......

 The Hunt Begins......

Using the Cray-1 Block Diagram as a reference, modules are sorted by their unique two-letter identification codes. Tags also indicate a brief description and location in the chassis. Last piece of info on the tag is the page in the Block Diagram that the particular module appears.

A Cray-1 Simulator.......

Anyone have a spare IBM 360/370?

Cray-1 Simulator Written in Fortran-IV for the IBM 360/370, and purported to run on CDC 6000/7000 series as well. Created largely to allow Cray-1 code development/debugging and analysis of algorithm performance of vector processing when access to a Cray-1 was not possible. Whew.......

What's In A Module....?

 Digging Deeper......

Above text from the Hardware Reference Manual. Module construction is Printed Circuit//Copper Plate//Printed Circuit. 5-Layer boards are an oddity.....

Whole bunch of FF's............

 F F F F F F F F...........

Cray-1 ECL module with "F"s handwritten on most of the 16-pin packages. The amount of marked IC's per module varies, some have none, some (as in this one) are all marked. Photographs of modules from (presumably) other machines show similar markings. Indication/disposition TBD........

Getting Started.......

Well, not the whole thing......

Stumbled across about a dozen modules in my junk drawer for this machine. Maybe not this particular machine, but you get the idea. The Cray-1 had approximately 1662 modules spread across 24 chassis. If my math is correct, we have 12/1662 of a Cray-1? Hard to tell at this point if those modules add up to anything, or what to do with them.
